A new era has begun for the City of Lincoln, Nebraska, as the SMG-managed Pinnacle Bank Arena held its ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening weekend on Thursday, August 29 – Saturday, August 31.
A host of dignitaries were on hand for the opening of the $179 million, 15,000-seat facility in Lincoln’s Haymarket District, including speeches from Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler, Pinnacle Bank Arena General Manager Tom Lorenz, SMG Senior Regional Vice President Joe Romano, University of Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Nebraska basketball coaches Tim Miles and Connie Yori. The event was kicked off by a performance from the University of Nebraska Pep Band and a routine by the Linh Quang Lion/Dragon Dance Troupe traditionally intended to bring good luck to new projects. A total of 11 speakers thanked voters, workers, crowd members, the city and the University of Nebraska.
SMG’s Joe Romano has opened arenas and other venues in the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and more. While each is unique, he says, Lincoln did it right. “There’s a commitment to quality that you don’t always see,” he said. “The fit, finish, the wide concourses, the nice seats…the city made great decisions. Obviously, it wasn’t done inexpensively, but you have a durable and well-done building here.”
Pinnacle Bank Arena General Manager Tom Lorenz thanked civic leaders who laid the groundwork for the project years ago and those who made a commitment along the journey from initial concept through construction. He praised the community for its support and how Lincoln welcomed his family when they moved here 16 years ago.
Groundbreaking for Pinnacle Bank Arena took place on Sept. 7, 2011; construction took 706 days until it was turned over to the City of Lincoln on Aug. 12, 2013. The project was completed five weeks ahead of schedule.
Pinnacle Bank Arena will be home to the University of Nebraska Men’s and Women’s basketball teams.
The first concert will take place on Friday, Sept. 13, as Michael Buble will take the stage. Other attractions include Jason Aldean Sept. 16, The Eagles Oct. 4, Miranda Lambert/Dierks Bentley Oct. 10, P!nk Nov. 9, Trans-Siberian Orchestra Nov. 14 and Elton John Nov. 23.
