August 12, 2013 (Peoria, IL) – In its continuing effort to remain an area leader in progressive environmental practices, the SMG-managed Peoria Civic Center is proud to announce the opening of PEP electric vehicle charging stations in its Marquee Parking Lot at Jefferson Street and Kumpf Boulevard.
A “green ribbon” cutting will formally open the stations at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14 in the lot; all media and the public are invited to attend.
A collaborative effort between the Peoria Civic Center, Farnsworth Group, Bessler Welding and Oberlander Electric, the stations will offer free charging (though regular parking fees will still apply). The stations feature easy-to-use touch screens that will guide the user through the charging process.
“The Farnsworth team brought this idea to the table, and guided us through the process. It gave us the opportunity to be the first solar powered charging station in down state Illinois. There was no question that this was the right thing to do,” said General Manager, Jim Wetherington.
The Peoria Civic Center has implemented a number of green initiatives in recent years. In 2010, the facility replaced all T-12 lamps and ballasts to high efficiency T-8 lamps and ballasts. In total, 2,677 lamps and 1,345 ballasts were changed, which ultimately saves 120,377 kilowatt hours of energy per year. In late 2011, recycling was added to the theater lobby and meeting rooms. Then, in 2012, the facility began to compost kitchen scraps and landscape waste.
Single stream recycling is currently available for request at each event held in the Peoria Civic Center and is heavily utilized in administrative offices. In addition, materials used loading in trade shows and conventions are recycled, as well as bottles, cups, and paper at Arena sporting events.
